- How do I request a word?
All the information to request a word is provided here.
- Why do you want word requests on your website and not emailed to you or on your YouTube channel?
It is really hard for me to keep track of all the requests for words, so I’d like to have all requests in one location that is searchable by me. I can search for requests in the comments on my website instantaneously! Finding them in emails is harder… and finding them on YouTube is basically impossible (Not searchable… yet owned by Google! Go figure!).
- How do I register on your website?
Sign up here to receive e-cards from me and to be able to request words or make comments on the site. I will never sell your email address, so you don’t ever have to worry about that!
- How can I be the teacher’s pet?
Just sign up to this website and make a comment and it will automatically make you eligible to be a teacher’s pet. Of course, an apple for the teacher, or other such forms of bribery *may* influence my choice! (But you didn’t hear that from me!)
- What are your sources for researching the word/phrase origins?
I use a multitude of source, some of which can be found here.
- How can I be a teacher’s assistant (TA)?
If you’d like to be a Teacher’s Assistant, which might actually involve doing something for me, then let the reigning TA know or let me know you are interested. You can start by being nice to other people in the comments section as it will show me that you will be a good TA.
- How do I get email updates when you make new posts?
That is a separate process.. sign up here in order to receive email updates whenever I write a post on this site or upload a new video. You can always unsubscribe from this without losing your account on this site. It is also 100% secure as the service is owned by Google.
- How do I get one of those cute pictures next to my comments?
They are called “gravatars” which are Globally Recognized Avatars – would that be part acronym part portmanteau? Go to this website and register your email address that you used to register on this website and upload a picture and it will show up on all your comments – even retroactively! It’s a universal service and I think it works on all Wordpress websites you comment on. If the gravatar does not show up right away, it may be that I am caching the images so it may take a day for it to show up, so be patient, but if it doesn’t show up after a while, email me and I’ll look into it. If you don’t pick a gravatar image, you are assigned a random monster image… but that image will change to your gravatar once you make one.
- How do I do the pretty code and links in my comments?

- Where is your complete list of words? It’s here.
- Are you single? Yes.. wait a minute, that question is not related to the site! Site questions only!
- How do I link to another comment? When you click the Date & Time of a comment, it gives you the link to that comment. You can copy it and paste it into another comment to link back to it.
- I have other questions I want to ask you or I think you should add here.
Good, you can either make a comment in the latest lesson or you can email me directly. You can contact me here. But I prefer comments on the videos.. easier to keep track of, and more of a community that way!
- What do you record and edit your videos with?
The earlier videos were recorded on my MacBook using iMovie and edited with Final Cut Pro. The later videos are recorded on a Sony Camcorder, but again, recorded directly to my MacBook and edited on Final Cut Pro. Now I’m going back to recording on my MacBook again at times.. so it varies between the MacBook and the camcorder.
If you need to figure out another aspect of the site.. request it in the comments of the latest lesson as someone there will invariably know the answer and will help you out, otherwise you can contact me directly.
I think I may have a better explanation of the word [ Poindexter ].
Probably misspelled as names often are ( take a close look at my User Name ) .

Click on the Admin link in the upper right of the page.
That will get you to a page that is called the Dashboard.
Then, in the upper left of the page is a link called, Profile. Click it, which will take you to the profile page with all of your personal settings. Scroll down to Contact Info and you will be able to change your email address there. If you need additional help, reply here or elsewhere.

Marina has the instructions up above where she talks about the cute picture next to your comment.
Quick overview:
To change your avatar, you go to a website called:
http://gravatar.com/
Signup to that site using any username and password.
Then, when you add an email address, make sure
that you add the same email address that you used here on the HFW site.
Upload an image of your choosing.
Then, wait 15 minutes and your avatar will show up here.
You don’t need to login or create a comment to see the change. Just visit your comment above and you’ll see that gravatar change.
If after 15 minutes you don’t see your gravatar image change, then just clear your browser cache and browser cookies and the image will show up.
If you need more help, just respond to my comment here or anywhere and I will be notified.

How can I delete my account ?

I recommend that you keep the account for several reasons.
The first reason is that if the account were to be deleted, another user could create an account with that same name and then essentially impersonate you. Having this account essentially locks up that user name in your favor, whether you ever use it again or not.
If you ever decide to use that account in the future, it is ready for you to use.
You can just leave the account as is without any action on your part. If you want to feel more comfortable about your securing your personal information, just go to the Dashboard, then click the Profile link, then you can remove or change any of your personal information that you have there.

To change your password, do the following:
1. When you are logged in, look at the top right of any page and you’ll see a link called Dashboard. Click on it.
2. In the Dashboard, look at the upper left of the page and you’ll see a link called Profile. Click it.
3. When you are in the Profile page, scroll all the way down the bottom and you’ll see where you can change your password.

Do nothing. Let it lie fallow forever. You might need a new E-mail address for another account. If you don’t want to do that, you could request that M delete you.

Hey, I didn’t realize I was a help, nice to know. I’ve always posted here at the website with a little bit of a cheeky attitude & hope you were never offended (too badly). Have missed seeing you around. This website is an interesting forum & yes sometimes things seem to get out of hand, but traffic to the site is what fuels Marina’s sponsor’s interest in spending advertising dollars here (probably more like pennies, but lots & lots of them).
As far as making a little money for yourself… because of Marina’s introducing me (and others) to Twitter I have followed & been followed by some very interesting people. Many of them make a living & some a “large” living, on the internet, with Blogs, social media & mashing the things together & getting connected to people. I’m still in the playing around stages at twitter & don’t know if I’ll graduate to making any money at it, but I’ve made some connections & talked to some interesting folks (some are boring, but “driven”). For now I make my living at a “brick & mortar” business with a building I own & another building I rent, dealing with clients in a face to face fashion as we get our hands dirty workng on their automotive Steeds, pampering their precious rides with the finest service & tires in western Canada… oops, launched into advertising mode there for a bit.
Anyways come on over to the Hotforwords website every now & then & say hi to folks, it sure was nice to get an email, that you’d taken the time to connect with me. If you feel so lead, make an account @ twitter & connect there in 140 characters or less, with people you find interesting & post your latest blog entries & stuff you find interesting there. Who knows what it could lead to.
People always google stuff @ HFW, it’s only cheating if you get caught & of course, detention could only be fun, right.

Just recently, I can’t get your videos to play on your website. Both IE and Firefox won’t play. The “clock” just spins but the videos never start. They work in YouTube and on iTunes. Have you heard from anyone else about this?

you could download itunes, download the podcasts, then go to:
my music, itunes, itunes music, podcasts and then Hot For Words.
And just paste these in to your Zen.

I’m a newbie, but I’ve been to Moscov twice, in ‘88 and ‘89. I like the ratio of M:W there!
Anyway, I thought you should do something on the word, “ort.” My English scrabble buddy played it and, despite the cunning linguist that I am (don’t say that too fast!), I challenged it and lost the turn. It means “a bit of food” or “crumb.”
#2 seems the more logical choice to me. ALSO: I would like to know the origin of the word “exfoliate” (NOTE: my spell checker says I am spelling exfoliate incorrectly, but the label on my bottle of skin cleanser agrees with me.)
